The Republic of Indonesia’s Directorate General of Intellectual Property (“DJKI”) has launched a new logo for one of the intellectual properties, namely Geographical Indication, as well as a marketplace application related to IP called the Intellectual Property Marketplace (“IP Marketplace“). The launch was associated with World Intellectual Property Day, held on April 26th, 2022.

Geographical Indication New Logo

The following is the definition of the geographical indication as stated in Article 1 Number (6) of Law Number 20 of 2016 on Marks and Geographical Indications, as revised by Law Number 11 of 2020 about Job Creation (“Trademark Law”):

“Geographical Indication means any indication which identifies goods and/or a product as originating from a particular region of which its geographical environment factors including nature, labor, or combination of both factors are attributable to a given reputation, quality, and characteristics of the produced goods and/or product.”

Geographical indications have a significant influence on economic matters. According to Yasonna Laoly, Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia, who was quoted as follows:

“Geographical indications have shown to be a catalyst not just for the nation branding, but also for the economic independence and coincide with tourism.”

There are changes in color composition and form of the geographical indications logo.

Initially, the color composition, originally blue and yellow, has transformed to red and white to represent the Indonesian national identity. In terms of expectation, this logo hopefully can increase the confidence of geographical indication products to compete in the worldwide market. Furthermore, the introduction of the new logo provides legal clarity to owners of geographical indications.

New Program Launch: IP Marketplace

On the other hand, the IP Marketplace was designed to connect intellectual property owners with potential investors and purchasers of their intellectual property. This application serves as a link for the business actors to advertise their products. IP Marketplace will be a simple way for intellectual property owners to sell and license their intellectual property to prospective investors/buyers. This manifests DJKI’s concern in favor of national economic growth.
