Tokyo, (October 27, 2016). This IP Forum concerning Intellectual Property Rights between Indonesia and Japan. This forum was held for the second time in Japan. The first forum was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on October 27, 2015. This forum was aimed at IP stakeholders to discuss the spread of the awareness and understanding of IP system to the Japanese and Indonesian businessmen and to strengthen the cooperation relations between the Indonesian Government and the Japan Government.

Indonesia and Japan have a long term bilateral relationship since Indonesian Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA), signed in 2007. Indonesia is the biggest market in ASEAN Countries for the Japanese industrial products. Based on the data, approximately 40 % ASEAN market is in Indonesia. Indonesia has approximately 250 million people from 600 million population of ASEAN. Japan is the most important trading partner for Indonesia. Indonesia had received 23 billion US Dollar from the total value of exports to Indonesia from Japan in 2015. It figured Japan at the second biggest exporter country to Indonesia.

This forum was held in Okura Hotel, Tokyo, Japan on October 24, 2016. This event was held in cooperation between The Japan Patent Office (JPO), The Indonesian Patent Office (DGIP) and The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). Delegations from Indonesia who attended this forum were : Mr. Yasonna H. Laoly as Minister for Law and Human Rights of Indonesia, stakeholders from The Indonesian Patent Office, Mr. Masayuki Koyanagi as Deputy Commissioner of The Japan Patent Office.

Mr. Yasona Laoly said, “This forum will provide a valuable contribution to The IP system between both countries and encourage trade and investment between both countries and also encourage the economic growth of the two countries”.

Moreover, Mr. Yasona said that Indonesian Government had amended the new Laws pertaining copyright and patents. The Indonesian government required some supports from the Japan government for developing a better IP system in Indonesia.
